Petroglyphs of TANBALY. UNESCO
Petroglyphs of the archaeological landscape of Tanbaly are one of the most ancient and striking monuments of rock art in Semirechye, and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Here, in the late 1950s, a sanctuary with a large number of rock paintings was discovered; its study began in the 1970s and 1980s. The Tanbaly tract is located 170 km northwest of the city of Almaty in the Anrakai mountains.
There are images of sun-headed deities, mummers, sword-bearing warriors, married couples, women in labor, as well as multi-figure compositions depicting people and animals, scenes of animal hunting and scenes of bull sacrifice. Scenes depicting chariots are rare.
Most of the petroglyphs date back to the Bronze Age. The drawings, made in the Saka “animal” style, are placed mainly separately from more ancient petroglyphs, but in some cases they complement or even overlap them. Medieval rock carvings are carved on the hills surrounding the gorge and in the adjacent waterless sayas. The central complex is distinguished by the densest concentration of petroglyphs and, presumably, altars, which indicates the possible ceremonial purpose of this place for sacrifices.
